Abstract

Since the 1990s, international migration has increased significantly and taken on increasingly complex configurations, particularly in South–South flows, challenging approaches rooted in methodological nationalism. Bengali labour migration to inland Brazil—especially to Rolândia and Jaguapitã, municipalities in northern Paraná that are integrated into the meatpacking sector with a segment oriented toward the halal market—highlights the emergence of new destinations and the reconfiguration of contemporary mobility circuits. The main critical frameworks on contemporary international migration mobilised in this study include Krissman, Glick Schiller, Triandafyllidou, Baeninger, Castles, and Campillo-Carrete. The study aims to understand, in a situated manner, how Bengali workers negotiate, reinterpret, and enact Brazilian migration policies across their legal, institutional, and practical dimensions, focusing on the period from 2013 to 2023, i.e., since the onset of the Bengali migratory flow. The investigation draws on the Analysis of International Migration Practices (AIMP), conceived as a methodological strategy that articulates narratives and practices to capture meaning-making configurations, forms of transit and institutional negotiation, as well as modes of entry, available legal statuses, and welcoming/reception dynamics shaping the migratory experience. Empirical material was produced through in-depth interviews with Bengali migrants, family members residing in Brazil, and representatives of a welcoming organisation, conducted in two cycles of data collection and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the State University of Londrina (CEP-UEL), Opinion No. 4,632,728. By integrating micro- and macro-level scales, the study contributes to understanding the interiorisation of international migration in Brazil and broadens the debate on South–South mobility, migration governance, and contemporary transformations in global mobility.
